The Biotechnical Analytical Techniques Unit (BAT) is a common services unit of the Institute of Food Science Research (CIAL, CSIC-UAM), equipped with high-performance instrumentation and facilities to carry out a wide range of analytical measurements. The Unit consists of two level 2 biological containment laboratories (Microbiology and Cell Cultures), with auxiliary areas for Media Preparation and Decontamination, a Bioanalytical Techniques Laboratory, four Auxiliary Equipment Areas, as well as sample preparation equipment in the Pilot Plant.

The function of the BAT Unit is to provide scientific and technical support to researchers through the maintenance of laboratories and equipment, ensuring their safety and prevention, employing appropriate methods for sample analysis, and designing a tailored workflow for each objective/project.

To achieve these objectives, all available microbiological, physicochemical techniques, and equipment in the BAT Unit facilities are utilized. Improvements are implemented in food analysis protocols, and the obtained results are interpreted and analyzed.

BAT Unit offers a wide range of services (both to CIAL groups and external clients), ranging from the maintenance and supply of microbial strains and cell lines to sample lyophilization, as well as microbiological and physicochemical analysis of relevant food samples, according to the desired objectives or established regulations.
