The BAT Unit carries out the following activities internally:
Waste management
The Unit is responsible for the internal management of biological waste from P2 laboratories and chemical waste from the entire institute. An authorized company periodically removes containers with these waste materials.
Coordination of health surveillance for personnel working in P2 laboratories
Users of P2 laboratories undergo periodic medical examinations and vaccinations at the CSIC and UAM medical services due to the handling of human, animal, and microbiological material in these laboratories.
Hygiene control (preventive and corrective)
Good environmental conditions are essential in P2 laboratories. Therefore, the Unit periodically performs the following operations:

Maintenance of shared equipment at the center:
The unit is responsible for the maintenance and verification of over 150 equipment, including small laboratory equipment or basic laboratory equipment such as pipettes, baths, incubators with or without controlled atmosphere, centrifuges, chambers, ultrafreezers, pure and ultrapure water systems, as well as common scientific and technical equipment of the Institute, such as qPCR machines, autoclaves, flow cytometers, spectrophotometers (UV-VIS, fluorescence, Nanodrop), microscopy equipment (light microscopes and inverted microscopes), automated cell counters, among others.
Sterilization service
Sterilization is the process by which all viable microorganisms present on an object or surface, including microbial spores, are destroyed.
For microbiological assays, it is necessary to use sterilized materials and culture medium. BAT is responsible for their sterilization.
Scientific Outreach:
The Unit participates in Outreach activities such as the Science Week or guided tours by the Center, where students are explained the functioning of the different equipment owned by the Unit, as well as the various activities carried out by BAT.
Internal Staff Training
On a monthly basis, a theoretical and practical introduction to the laboratories and shared equipment is provided to new users.
The goal of the training is to familiarize users with the laboratories, the different shared equipment, their operation and and preventive measures to be applied in each case..
