Brain and intestinal microbiota

  • Brain communicates with the intestine. Who has never experienced belly discomfort or even diarrhea before a critical exam or constipation during a stressful journey? Moreover, our intestine talks with the brain and makes us aware of intestinal pain under several circumstances like stress or bad digestion following a copious meal. This both ways dialogue between brain and intestine is the so-called Brain-intestine-microbiota axis that is participated by the nervous, endocrine and immune system.

The intestinal microbiota plays a key role in this feedback communication of brain and intestine producing neurotransmitters substances, linking peripheral intestinal nerves and modulating intestinal permeability. All this keep us healthy but under several circumstances such as abusive antibiotic treatments, inadequate diets over long periods of time or excessive stress, the intestinal microbiota can be unbalanced and favors the presence of cognitive and behaviour disorders.

The Group currently cooperates with a company in a project granted by CDTI with the aim of discovering the microbial links between intestinal and mental disorders of a children population. We try to improve their intestinal fitness through a diet supplemented with probiotic bacteria. But not only this, we also design nutritious food that makes their meals more attractive and their lives a bit more enjoyable and easier.
