Gerardo Álvarez, PhD

Posdoctoral Researcher

Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Gerardo Álvarez is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Food Science Research (CIAL-CSIC) of the Spanish National Research Council, in Madrid, Spain. After finishing his degree in Chemistry (2009), he decided to strengthen a multidisciplinary background with a Master in Biotechnology (2009-2011). In 2011 Gerardo started his PhD studies with an FPI Fellowship (MINECO, 2011-2015) leading to his PhD degree in Chemical Science and Technology at USC in June 2015 (Summa Cum Laude and Extraordinary Doctorate award). A short-term predoctoral fellowship (MINECO, May-August, 2014) also gave Gerardo the opportunity to establish an important collaboration in Germany with the group of Prof. Harald Horn (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology).
Funded by MINECO, Gerardo carried out his first postdoctoral research (July-September, 2015) in the group of Prof. Thomas Ternes (Federal Institute of Hydrology, Germany), collaborating in the FRAME EU project and strengthening his analytical background. He carried out a second postdoctoral research stage at the Institute for Global Food Security (Queen´s University Belfast, UK), headed by Prof. Christopher Elliot (April 2016-May 2017), participating in the Horizon2020 EU MultiCoop project (ref. 692195). During his time in Germany and UK, Gerardo has built an extensive collaborative network with international partners (UK, Germany, Austria, Czchec Republic, Colombia, Portugal) which is now reflected in his publications. In May 2017, Gerardo obtained a Juan de la Cierva-Formación Postdoctoral Contract at CIAL-CSIC, where he is currently leading the chemical characterization and metabolomics analysis as scientific team member in the AGL2017-89417-R project (MINECO), as well as in other R+D projects with private companies (Alcaliber, S.A, EazyHemp, S.L).
Dr. Álvarez is author of a total of 32 publications (15 with international partners), including 6 book and encyclopedia chapters in prestigious international publishers and 24 SCI articles, with an average impact index higher than 95% of indexed journals in the JRC categories of Food Science & Technology and Analytical Chemistry. He has participated as team member in 10 competitive R+D projects (8 National and 2 EU Projects) and in 15 contracts with private companies (Inditex, S.A.; Alcaliber, S.A.) and public institutions. This research activity has resulted in a total of 56 contributions (22 oral communications) to national and international conferences, holding 3 best contribution awards (2 international). He also received the VII SPME award from Sigma-Aldrich in 2014. In October 2019, Gerardo was selected by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC-WHO) to participate in the EMBO practical course “Metabolomics Bioinformatics in Human Health”. Gerardo’s main research activity is focused on the development and validation of new green analytical methodologies, based on advanced extraction technique (SPE, SPME, PLE, MSPD, QuEChERS, SFE) coupled to GC-MS/MS (QqQ, TOF) and LC-MS/MS (QqQ, Q-TOF, Orbitrap, Ion-Trap), to obtain and characterize secondary metabolites from natural matrices with potential bioactivity.
