Alberto Valdés graduated in Food Science and Technology at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain) in 2010. From 2011 to 2016 he carried out his Ph.D. thesis in Biology and Food Sciences at the Institute of Food Science Research – National Research Council (CIAL-CSIC, Spain). His Ph.D. thesis (Cum Laude with honors and European Ph.D) obtained the Extraordinary Doctorate award in the Section of Food Chemistry and Technology. From 2016 to 2018, he was a Post-Doctoral researcher in the Analytical Chemistry department at Uppsala University (Sweden). From 2018 to 2020, he was a Post-Doctoral researcher in the Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry and Chemical Engineering department at the University of Alcalá (Spain), and for 7 months during this period, he was a Visitor Scientist in the Fiehn Laboratory at UC Davis (USA), a laboratory that leads the NIH West Coast Metabolomics Center. Currently he is a Juan de la Cierva Post-Doctoral researcher in the Foodomics Laboratory at CIAL-CSIC.
His research activity is focused on (i) the development and application of advanced analytical methods to identify and quantify the effect of natural food ingredients, natural extracts or foods, on the transcriptome, proteome and metabolome of different models (in vitro and in vivo); (ii) the identification of the signal transduction pathways and metabolic processes affected, the mechanisms of action, and the discovery of potential (bio)markers altered by those compounds using bioinformatics tools; and (iii) the development and application of different targeted and discovery methods to study the phosphoprotein expression in different models using high resolution mass spectrometry.
His scientific work is reflected in a total of 35 scientific articles published in high impact index journals included in the SCI, 1 publication in non-indexed journals, and 10 book chapters published in prestigious editorials. He has participated as team member in 6 competitive National R+D projects and in 1 contract with a private company (Friesland Nederland B.V.). The results obtained in his research career have derived in 63 contributions to national and international conferences, with 3 invited lectures, 10 oral communications and 10 communications in poster format presented by himself. He has directed the research work carried out by a master's student (Final Master's Project) and one Degree Project in Chemistry at Uppsala University. He has collaborated in teaching tasks in the Advanced Mass Spectrometry – Proteomics and the Advanced Molecular Technology and Instrumentation for Proteome Analyses courses at Uppsala University, and in the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory course at University of Alcalá. He has also given several seminars in different courses (Omics Technologies - Master in Management and Development of Biomedical Technologies, Theoretical-practical course of introduction to the omics techniques and its application in Science and Food Technology, and Controlling and improving the quality and safety of food). In addition, he has reviewed articles for different international journals included in the SCI (TrAC-Trends Anal-Chem., J. Funct. Foods, Trends Food Sci. Technol., Nutr. Res.).
